The Laughing Otter- because life’s just too short

Good evening!

So today was a not so busy day. We took the pups to the dog park (Koda, Mirax, and Abby) and I slept way late… but it was nice. Then we went out for a little afternoon, I returned a slicer that didn’t work and got store credit, we browsed about the mall a little bit… a nice, relaxed day.

So here’s the bento for Orion today!

Leftover chicken and veggie yakisoba, cup of apple bites and a soy sauce bottle, and spam fried rice, all decorated with bell pepper rings.

Very pleased with this one. I mean, it was just a quick little bento, ’cause I used leftovers from the other day, which I conveniently (and accidentally) stored in a bento tupperware anyway! I also got to use a bit of sushi grass to seperate the different food… which isn’t exciting except it’s my first time!

Also, I’m freezing the leftover rice in some little cups, so that I can just stick them in a bento as a side later without worrying about making more or anything.

Orion pickedĀ  up some wax paper for me today. We’re hoping that it’ll be a firm enough paper to fold into boxes- that will make perfect little ‘takehome’ boxes for snacks after classes, seperators in lunches that can be sized exactly to the box’s proportions and whatnot. I’m excited. ^_^

Anyway, so that’s the bento for today! Have a great day and see you all later!

I spent all last night looking up new recipes that are easy, fast and efficient, that I can put in Orion’s (and Ennosuke’s) lunch.

I worry less about Ennosuke. He can eat at work. Orion can’t- he has to bag his lunch or pay through the nose for ickie food-court food, like pizza or cheap sandwiches. Not healthy!

So I have discovered recipes for spam fried rice, Omuraisu, chicken katsu. tea marbled eggs, and chicken dumplings, all from Cooking Cute, a bento website I adore.

There’s also recipes for yakionigiri, or fried rice balls, and curry gyoza, both from a site called Lunch in a Box.

Today we’re trying the spam fried rice and a fridge-cleansing yakisoba stir fry.

Now if only I could use stuff before it goes bad! I lost half a box of peaches to mold, a cucumber that got soft before I could get to it, and I still have two more cucumbers, a bag of pluots, a handful of apples, a bag of potatoes and a bunch more peaches.

The peaches, or at least seven of them, are going to a neighbor. I can’t eat them all!

I’ve been thinking of calling my cousin- he’s a chef, I bet he’s got lots of ideas for easy bento fixins.

So I’m off to make some fried rice and pack up a quick lunch for Ennosuke (Orion doesn’t work today) and maybe get a relaxing little bit of time to rest before I make dinner!

Thanks, be safe and have a great day!

Oh! And some other pictures for you:

Hii!

I love cooking. I love making bento. I love preparing food, even difficult and complicated food!

I don’t really like thinking, though, and my brain hurts from spending all day thinking about what I can put into a bento that is both cute and nutritious, varied enough to be fun, and preparable with what I have in my kitchen.

Today’s result:

Fruit hearts and Stars (peaches, apples and kiwi), a salad, and spaghetti biscuit cups. (And cherry tomatoes in Orion's.)

A modified biscuit-bun recipe. Last time it was BBQ chicken in the biscuits but we had spaghetti for dinner, so it went into the buns instead.

It wasn’t as cute as I wanted it to be. But so far this week I’ve already made all sorts of other stuff, and I’m running low on groceries. I paced and paced the kitchen, looking for anything to put in, and this is all I could find!

Tomorrow, Fridge Cleaning Stirfry. We get paid tomorrow, so with any luck I can get more fixins. If only I can figure out what fixins I need!

Also, yesterday I got a haircut. I feel so much better now!

Yes, I know it doesn’t make sense. But that’s okay, neither does my life most days!

We’ve been doing well the last few days. There was the birth class last night, which is nice because I am, evidently, a little ahead of the game. It was ‘relaxation for labor’ and the teacher said that her eventual goal is for all of us to be able to take a deep breath and relax our entire bodies on the exhale. I already can, and Orion kept snickering because I’m trying really hard to play along and do these things step by step- because, you know, maybe I’m doing it wrong or something, so I want to make sure!

I got my revenges, though. He fell asleep three times during the relaxation step process. Take that, snorer!

Otherwise, it’s been a sort of happy monotony. Boring, but compared to the explosive stress of last week, a happy sort of boring. Go to class, to go the midwives (everything is normal), go shopping for groceries, cook lunches and dinners, pick up the house and play with the dogs. Normal, everyday stuff. No drama, no stress, no unusual things either direction!

It’s nice. ^_^

Oh, in the meantime, here are some pictures:

Hearts: Sauteed Mushrooms; Barrels: BBQ Chicken; Flowers: Chicken Salad. Also, tiny cherry tomatoes, soy sauce and a monkey full of wasabi. Not pictured: Pocky!

but I try to only write happy, good things in this space. The last week has not fallen into a ‘happy, good things’ sort of category.

But, I try to look on the brighter side. I got a $600 check that someone’s been owing me for the last year, and all the bad things from the week were repaired. (A short synopsis: My radiator went out in one car and the other overheated, leaving me ten hours stressed and unable to finish my daily errands, followed by other traumatically stressful events culminating in a good cry. After that, it was all post-disaster management!)

So I got my car back today, (thank you, my favorite mechanic in the history of ever!) and with my windfall of money could even afford to pay for the repairs in full with some left over. This pleases me.

I picked up a new bento box from Daiso today- a three-layer picnic box. I’ve been meaning and meaning to get it, and today I gave it and did. I also got a cake-pan for some zucchini bread I want to make for the childbirth class snack, and some adorable little muffin papers, too. Dragonsama got some filter-paper to filter the oil she uses to fry chicken (She’s very proud of her newfound ability to cook chicken in oil without burning the house down) and some little sushi molds. We also found inflatable costume breasts.

Don’t ask me, I don’t have a clue.

Otherwise, it’s been the usual. I have some new pictures- some..where… but I appear to have lost my phone, so you’re out of luck for now.

Abby is getting so big! She went to the vet on Monday, and she’s 16 lbs now. A far cry from the tiny puppy I carried around in my bag! She was dewormed but evidently it didn’t do it’s job, because she’s still … um… producing worms, so the vet wants to see her again tomorrow.

Mostly, I’m just glad the stressful part of the week is over. Orion stays home for the weekend, now, Ennosuke’s work hired another person so he has normalish hours instead of six ten hour days a week, and Dragonsama got her permit again so she has a legitimate ID.

We are doing good!
