The Laughing Otter- because life’s just too short

Okay! Lets see where I left off.

At last update I had a sinus cold. That’s over and gone with, hooray! The baby feels much better too, and we got a very cute humidifier.

$35 at Target! Rar!
$35 at Target! Rar!

It’s made a huge difference in both his and my head colds. Delightful! A lovely lady at the Rockwood Valley Clinic made the suggestion and we’re very grateful!

So, as I mentioned- I got a new laptop and a new computer.

Lovely, aren’t they?

Mkay. So on the 19th, we went out to Bostons for dinner after a fun day at Riverfront Park Plaza (I think that’s what it’s called! The ‘mall’ by the park). The pictures from the day out didn’t turn out so hot (We went to see Coraline again!) but dinner’s did. This is one of the few that worked, taken from the parking garage of a series of runner statues. It’s a little creepy at first!

This one was taken from the escalator in the shopping center of the street and architecture. It’s not perfect but you get the idea.

This is me and Ennosuke. Orion took the picture- evidentally the menu contained delicious food ideas! (That’s my laptop, by the way. Pretty…)

This is a panoramic of the restaurant. They’re very bright and colorful!

It was a fun night.

I got more pictures of the pets, too!

They’ve been off and on behaving, and it’s been interesting. The neighbors complained that the dogs were barking, but I swear they were inside. Wierd.

I’ve got a load of new pictures of the baby, too!

Such a handsome guy…

On to bento!

I got new gear. A nifty little bento with three compartments and silverware in the lid. Very nice! Two bucks at the grocery outlet.

I packed a lunch for Orion, for tomorrow’s work. Silly me, he has tomorrow off! But here’s the pictures of it anyway.

There’s chicken and mashed potatoes, (and a thing of gravy but it’s not pictured), glazed carrots, a small container of mixed veggies, two steamed dumplings, two fried miso-tuna-tofu hearts, a miso-marinated chickie egg (that looks like a demented snowman) and some broccoli florets, and a radish with hearts. The sauces are ranch and catalina for his veggies. This is, by far, the cutest bento I’ve ever made. *laughs*

Snack bento I made for my mom. On top is a rice ball, some chicken breast, and some steamed broccoli with a little sauce container of teriyaki sauce. On the bottom was fail-snack. It was leftover alfredo mixed with some crumbled chicken breast and steamed broccoli, and chicken on the side- but the chicken was bad. It was my dinner, and supposed to be her next-day snack, but it gave me food poisoning. I dumped it out. She had a different snack, and I didn’t have time for a picture. It was… if I remember, there was a babybel cheese, some crackers, some broccoli (I had lots) and some meatloaf cut into a flower on a rice ball (also cut into a flower). It appears Orion has a pic on his phone, I’ll update that shortly.

It’s a Very Brown Bento! *laughs* There’s the drumsticks of a Cornish Game Hen on a bed of white rice, three gyoza and some heart croquettes, a chili-powder tuna-miso-tofu heart, a soy-marinated egg, three little ‘flowers’ of the same tofu-miso-tuna mix that are pan fried instead of deep fried, and some meatloaf. The side dish is fried rice. It’s all very brown in color, but very delicious in flavor.

I’ve installed Photoshop on here, and I plan to fiddle with it for a while and see if I can get the hang of making compilations so that instead of pages and pages of big pictures you can just load one picture that’s all of them in miniature.  Ennosuke says I can even learn to use ImageReady to make little animated gifs. That’s be cute, too!

I finished a new book, called The Snow Queen by Mercedes Lackey. It’s the fourth book in the Five Hundred Kingdoms series, and I highly recommend them all. This one was a little disappointing, but not in the writing- only because I simply cannot figure out the fairy tale it’s based around!

Anyway, it’s 4:14 in the morning and I’m pretty exhausted. The baby is sleeping and I should do likewikes if I’m to be up and existing tomorrow! Take care!

Blue rice, asparagus, ground chicken 'nuggets', a bottle of teriyaki sauce, a bowl of cheesy pasta something mix, and three heart shaped chicken and potato croquettes.

So, today’s bento- I made it with leftover rice from the Valentine bento. The croquettes turned out so much better this time, since I made the mashed potatoes with a little butter but no cream. They held together like a dream! I froze the rest of them- tomorrow, crab rangoons!

Cheesy pasta stuff, and a bagel with roast beef (wrapped in tin foil).

Mom's Bento: Cheesy pasta stuff, and a bagel with roast beef (wrapped in tin foil).

I bought the box with little-boy boxers in it- I gave the boxers to my cousin, but I kept the box for my mom’s snack for after work. Cutest scooby-doo metal tin! The pin’s missing in the back though, so it’s not too secure.

100_0057It’s really cute, and the perfect size to hold half a sandwich and a little baggie of something else.

We went to a baby shower for my cousin and his wife, and had loads of fun! We got lots of pictures, but since most of my family prefers not to be posted online, I’ll just say that it was fun, my great-aunt was there and I got pics of her with Josh, and it was just incredible.

Meanwhile, we got our new camera, so the picture quality increased on my images, hooray! No more fuzzy cameraphone shots! Okay, probably at least a few more, but at least for now nice pictures!

They’re having a son as well, his name is Owen. So many boys! First there were twin boys, then another cousin had a boy, then I had a boy, and now they’re having a boy.

I keep telling Orion he needs to give me a girl. Just… not right now, although the girl-clothes are just adorable.

I had a wonderful Valentines! Orion set up a hint-hunt, where he gave me my first clue at the front door, and then each led me to the next. Along the way I found candies, a pink domo plushie, a Hello Kitty Pez set, and eventually tickets to see Coraline. It was a wonderful evening! My mom babysat, and we even got popcorn and soda and candy. It was just splendid.

Anyway, for now I’m mostly just waiting for the baby to settle down for bed- he’s adamant that this is playtime. Who am I to argue, since it is my playtime…

Soon we’ll crash, though.

Have a wonderful day!

So, I’m cleaning today. Or, I will be. I woke up this morning and the little things that usually don’t bother me are driving me insane! (The handle on the oven has some grey grime at the very edges. There’s a few drips down the side where someone’s pasta boiled over on the stove. The bathroom baseboards are dusty.)

So instead of obsessing, I enlisted the help of my ever-loving and VERY good at cleaning mate. Go Orion! It’s like… hurricane reversal. He’ll whirl through and make with the organized, which lets me make with the toothbrush and Q-tips to get into the corner cracks.

In other news: Abby went to Puppy-Playtime today, but didn’t play with anyone. She just hung out by the edge of the pen, as close to us as she could get, and looked at everyone like they were insane. We’ll try again next week.

I have two bento for you today, although I can’t really call them ‘bento’ I guess. They’re just box lunches. What’s the difference, anyway? Is a bento something different than a lunch packed in Tupperware? Well, either way, here’s the lunches from the 16th and the 17th:

Orion's Lunch
Orion’s Lunch

From the top: That’s four slices of bread, some provolone cheese, and two containers of ‘sauce’- Miracle Whip and Dijon Mustard. Next box down has ham and turkey, enough for two thick sandwiches, and some leaf lettuce broken into sandwich size. The bottom is a … hm… I think it was a Grilled Steak and Vegetable chunky soup. Two sandwiches and a can of soup was a hearty, thick meal for Orion that was hot and easy to eat. The verdict: Filling, but not overfilling. I didn’t have anything else to put on the sandwiches or I would have- maybe next time, sprouts or something. The hot soup was nice, since he works early in the mornings.

Ennosuke's Bento
Ennosuke’s Bento

This one qualifies as a ‘bento’ I think. Sort of. Anyway, from the top:
Iceburg salad mixed with Romaine, and a container of Thousand Island dressing. In the bento itself is a bed of rice in the top, and beef curry in the bottom. (Beef, onions, carrots and curry mix. I don’t make mine from scratch.) The verdict: Delicious. He ate all of it at work, it reheated very well, and the giant salad was excellent as a filler. (He’s watching what he eats, so I try to pack more veggies and salad than heavy food.)

All in all, they were fairly good lunches. I need to look into gyoza wrappers, though, because Lunch in a Box has great instructions for turning leftover curry into curry gyoza. I know I’ll have to drain off a lot of the liquid so that they don’t get soggy, but if I make the filling from the solids I can bottle the sauce into a little container to use as a dipping or flavoring sauce in the lunch. I also think I can ‘deep-fry’ my gyoza or other things in my wok. (Neither of the guys are particularly fond of steamed stuff, unless it’s certain vegetables. They say it ‘doesn’t taste cooked’ unless it’s crispy.)

In the meantime, I got some new equipment for packing lunches. We have a ‘cheap store’ that’s… insanely cheap. They get old, broken, damaged, or stale product from normal stores and sell it at tremendous markdown- which is good, but you have to check expiration dates on EVERYTHING, just in case. In any event, they had ketchup and mustard bottles, the sort you see at picnics, on sale for 39¢ each. They make excellent sauce bottles- not for in lunches, but for holding dressings, sauces, oils, or seasonings in the fridge. Most of the prepackaged stuff I use comes in wide-mouthed bottles that make controlling how much goes into my cup or pan a real terror- I always wind up oversaucing because I’m in too much of a hurry or I get distracted.

Don't pick them up by the lid-loops...
Don’t pick them up by the lid-loops…

With these, I can just squirt the right amount of sauce into my pan, and the long nozzle on them makes filling sauce containers a breeze. I wish I could afford the nice, clear-plastic ones that they sell for chocolate-making or whatnot, but for 39¢ you can’t beat these. They fill easily, and they dispense wonderfully.

Anyway, I think that’s all I’ve got to say today- oh! No! I got a membership at the YMCA, which is perfect because I can now swim every day if I want. Not today. Probably not tomorrow. But Monday through Friday, I can get in on the lap swimming and that will be spectactular. I’ve already gone Thursday and Friday (I got the membership on Thursday), and I’ll probably hit the lap swimming if it’s open on the weekends. I’ve noticed it’s mostly family and open swims on Saturdays and Sundays, though. Not really my thing.

Anyway, have a great afternoon!

Okay, that’s more exclaimation points than I ever use, so I must be excited.

A happy moment of new gear!
A happy moment of new gear!

We have sauce containers, including two new monkeys; food jars with twist on lids; and a Fit and Fresh Lunch on the Go thing. In purple!

The jars hold rice seasonings; the monkeys hold mayo or mustard or wasabi; the little bottles hold sauces.

It's not the best picture, but these are the food jars with the screwtop lids.

Fit and Fresh box- big bottom container, ice pack, and two lidded small containers. Perfect!

So I have new toys to boot, including a new (much smaller and more manageable) wok to work with, one that I can use by myself without help. I got some of the Press and Seal stuff, too- it was really cheap at the Walmart… which I’d say sucks, but honestly as much as I know that Walmart is bad…. I shop there a lot.

So tonight’s cooking adventure (or tomorrow’s!) will be the curry gyoza… or curry wontons, since I have wonton wrappers and not gyoza. Mm, potstickers! Adventures in cooking! Also, there will be beef-broccoli stir-fry eventually too.

Good evening!

So today was a not so busy day. We took the pups to the dog park (Koda, Mirax, and Abby) and I slept way late… but it was nice. Then we went out for a little afternoon, I returned a slicer that didn’t work and got store credit, we browsed about the mall a little bit… a nice, relaxed day.

So here’s the bento for Orion today!

Leftover chicken and veggie yakisoba, cup of apple bites and a soy sauce bottle, and spam fried rice, all decorated with bell pepper rings.

Very pleased with this one. I mean, it was just a quick little bento, ’cause I used leftovers from the other day, which I conveniently (and accidentally) stored in a bento tupperware anyway! I also got to use a bit of sushi grass to seperate the different food… which isn’t exciting except it’s my first time!

Also, I’m freezing the leftover rice in some little cups, so that I can just stick them in a bento as a side later without worrying about making more or anything.

Orion picked  up some wax paper for me today. We’re hoping that it’ll be a firm enough paper to fold into boxes- that will make perfect little ‘takehome’ boxes for snacks after classes, seperators in lunches that can be sized exactly to the box’s proportions and whatnot. I’m excited. ^_^

Anyway, so that’s the bento for today! Have a great day and see you all later!

but I try to only write happy, good things in this space. The last week has not fallen into a ‘happy, good things’ sort of category.

But, I try to look on the brighter side. I got a $600 check that someone’s been owing me for the last year, and all the bad things from the week were repaired. (A short synopsis: My radiator went out in one car and the other overheated, leaving me ten hours stressed and unable to finish my daily errands, followed by other traumatically stressful events culminating in a good cry. After that, it was all post-disaster management!)

So I got my car back today, (thank you, my favorite mechanic in the history of ever!) and with my windfall of money could even afford to pay for the repairs in full with some left over. This pleases me.

I picked up a new bento box from Daiso today- a three-layer picnic box. I’ve been meaning and meaning to get it, and today I gave it and did. I also got a cake-pan for some zucchini bread I want to make for the childbirth class snack, and some adorable little muffin papers, too. Dragonsama got some filter-paper to filter the oil she uses to fry chicken (She’s very proud of her newfound ability to cook chicken in oil without burning the house down) and some little sushi molds. We also found inflatable costume breasts.

Don’t ask me, I don’t have a clue.

Otherwise, it’s been the usual. I have some new pictures- some..where… but I appear to have lost my phone, so you’re out of luck for now.

Abby is getting so big! She went to the vet on Monday, and she’s 16 lbs now. A far cry from the tiny puppy I carried around in my bag! She was dewormed but evidently it didn’t do it’s job, because she’s still … um… producing worms, so the vet wants to see her again tomorrow.

Mostly, I’m just glad the stressful part of the week is over. Orion stays home for the weekend, now, Ennosuke’s work hired another person so he has normalish hours instead of six ten hour days a week, and Dragonsama got her permit again so she has a legitimate ID.

We are doing good!

Good morning!

I’ve been a little busy the last few days! My mom came into town from the other side of the state, so we’ve been going about doing things. Like a delicious, spectacular dinner last night out with almost everybody. I love Chinese, but it’s better in good company!

Today is a busy, busy, busy day, though. We go pick up the Corsica from the mechanics, pick up some old hay from a lady to make our Harvest decoration in the yard, go to the Farmer’s Market, take Abby to the Puppy PlayTime at Petco, and still make supper tonight that can be bento tomorrow for two!

Speaking of bento, do I have a picture of my most recent? *checks around*
Why, yes, it appears I do!
Fried potatoes with onions and celery topped with sauteed mushrooms. A little row of rice balls wrapped in nori. Frozen peas and a muffin with frosting, and a little bottle of soy sauce.

The container is new, a little microwave safe one from Daiso.

So other than that, it’s just days as usual, except more fun because Mom is here!
