The Laughing Otter- because life’s just too short

Okay! Lets see where I left off.

At last update I had a sinus cold. That’s over and gone with, hooray! The baby feels much better too, and we got a very cute humidifier.

It’s made a huge difference in both his and my head colds. Delightful! A lovely lady at the Rockwood Valley Clinic made the suggestion and we’re very grateful!

So, as I mentioned- I got a new laptop and a new computer.

Lovely, aren’t they?

Mkay. So on the 19th, we went out to Bostons for dinner after a fun day at Riverfront Park Plaza (I think that’s what it’s called! The ‘mall’ by the park). The pictures from the day out didn’t turn out so hot (We went to see Coraline again!) but dinner’s did. This is one of the few that worked, taken from the parking garage of a series of runner statues. It’s a little creepy at first!

This one was taken from the escalator in the shopping center of the street and architecture. It’s not perfect but you get the idea.

This is me and Ennosuke. Orion took the picture- evidentally the menu contained delicious food ideas! (That’s my laptop, by the way. Pretty…)

This is a panoramic of the restaurant. They’re very bright and colorful!

It was a fun night.

I got more pictures of the pets, too!

They’ve been off and on behaving, and it’s been interesting. The neighbors complained that the dogs were barking, but I swear they were inside. Wierd.

I’ve got a load of new pictures of the baby, too!

Such a handsome guy…

On to bento!

I got new gear. A nifty little bento with three compartments and silverware in the lid. Very nice! Two bucks at the grocery outlet.

I packed a lunch for Orion, for tomorrow’s work. Silly me, he has tomorrow off! But here’s the pictures of it anyway.

There’s chicken and mashed potatoes, (and a thing of gravy but it’s not pictured), glazed carrots, a small container of mixed veggies, two steamed dumplings, two fried miso-tuna-tofu hearts, a miso-marinated chickie egg (that looks like a demented snowman) and some broccoli florets, and a radish with hearts. The sauces are ranch and catalina for his veggies. This is, by far, the cutest bento I’ve ever made. *laughs*

Snack bento I made for my mom. On top is a rice ball, some chicken breast, and some steamed broccoli with a little sauce container of teriyaki sauce. On the bottom was fail-snack. It was leftover alfredo mixed with some crumbled chicken breast and steamed broccoli, and chicken on the side- but the chicken was bad. It was my dinner, and supposed to be her next-day snack, but it gave me food poisoning. I dumped it out. She had a different snack, and I didn’t have time for a picture. It was… if I remember, there was a babybel cheese, some crackers, some broccoli (I had lots) and some meatloaf cut into a flower on a rice ball (also cut into a flower). It appears Orion has a pic on his phone, I’ll update that shortly.

It’s a Very Brown Bento! *laughs* There’s the drumsticks of a Cornish Game Hen on a bed of white rice, three gyoza and some heart croquettes, a chili-powder tuna-miso-tofu heart, a soy-marinated egg, three little ‘flowers’ of the same tofu-miso-tuna mix that are pan fried instead of deep fried, and some meatloaf. The side dish is fried rice. It’s all very brown in color, but very delicious in flavor.

I’ve installed Photoshop on here, and I plan to fiddle with it for a while and see if I can get the hang of making compilations so that instead of pages and pages of big pictures you can just load one picture that’s all of them in miniature.  Ennosuke says I can even learn to use ImageReady to make little animated gifs. That’s be cute, too!

I finished a new book, called The Snow Queen by Mercedes Lackey. It’s the fourth book in the Five Hundred Kingdoms series, and I highly recommend them all. This one was a little disappointing, but not in the writing- only because I simply cannot figure out the fairy tale it’s based around!

Anyway, it’s 4:14 in the morning and I’m pretty exhausted. The baby is sleeping and I should do likewikes if I’m to be up and existing tomorrow! Take care!

Blue rice, asparagus, ground chicken 'nuggets', a bottle of teriyaki sauce, a bowl of cheesy pasta something mix, and three heart shaped chicken and potato croquettes.

Blue rice, asparagus, ground chicken 'nuggets', a bottle of teriyaki sauce, a bowl of cheesy pasta something mix, and three heart shaped chicken and potato croquettes.

So, today’s bento- I made it with leftover rice from the Valentine bento. The croquettes turned out so much better this time, since I made the mashed potatoes with a little butter but no cream. They held together like a dream! I froze the rest of them- tomorrow, crab rangoons!

Cheesy pasta stuff, and a bagel with roast beef (wrapped in tin foil).

Mom's Bento: Cheesy pasta stuff, and a bagel with roast beef (wrapped in tin foil).

I bought the box with little-boy boxers in it- I gave the boxers to my cousin, but I kept the box for my mom’s snack for after work. Cutest scooby-doo metal tin! The pin’s missing in the back though, so it’s not too secure.

100_0057It’s really cute, and the perfect size to hold half a sandwich and a little baggie of something else.

We went to a baby shower for my cousin and his wife, and had loads of fun! We got lots of pictures, but since most of my family prefers not to be posted online, I’ll just say that it was fun, my great-aunt was there and I got pics of her with Josh, and it was just incredible.

Meanwhile, we got our new camera, so the picture quality increased on my images, hooray! No more fuzzy cameraphone shots! Okay, probably at least a few more, but at least for now nice pictures!

They’re having a son as well, his name is Owen. So many boys! First there were twin boys, then another cousin had a boy, then I had a boy, and now they’re having a boy.

I keep telling Orion he needs to give me a girl. Just… not right now, although the girl-clothes are just adorable.

I had a wonderful Valentines! Orion set up a hint-hunt, where he gave me my first clue at the front door, and then each led me to the next. Along the way I found candies, a pink domo plushie, a Hello Kitty Pez set, and eventually tickets to see Coraline. It was a wonderful evening! My mom babysat, and we even got popcorn and soda and candy. It was just splendid.

Anyway, for now I’m mostly just waiting for the baby to settle down for bed- he’s adamant that this is playtime. Who am I to argue, since it is my playtime…

Soon we’ll crash, though.

Have a wonderful day!

So, my sister is coming for a visit! Sometime the beginning of March. I can’t wait!

I have bento pictures for you, too, and some new baby pics as well.

01-26-09-bento-new-yearNew Year Bento for Orion to take to work with him and share with his coworkers: The hearts are just plain rice with furikake sprinkles, and the other container is chicken and potato croquettes and crab rangoon. The broccoli are there to keep things from moving.

02-01-09-bento-snack-benMy dinner bento! Since Orion is ill today, I haven’t had much chance to eat (between the baby and the chores). So Ennosuke was kind enough to make me a snack… that’s cocktail smokies wrapped in croissant and baked, with the leftover smokes fried (dark like I like them!) and summer sausage along the front with Ritz crackers around the edge. It came with a glass of milk, even!

Puck, my dear ferret, is ill. I think the stresses caught up to him, and he lost a lot of weight, refusing to eat. The vet recommended fluids, and so I’ve been doing his treatments at home- 25cc of subceutaneous fluids every twelve hours, and a special diet to put some meat back on his tiny bones. He’s active, at least a little more so now, and he’s fighting the feedings so I think he’s improving.

Unfortunately, his blood sugar is still really low. He’s got very pale gums and he’s not acting very lively. I missed his vet appointment, I think. I’ll take him in soon, though. It’s very important.

But I’m making the effort.

I’d like to say things are busy here, but in reality I’m just not thinking straight.

I’m not thinking much at all, actually. *laughs* So I’ll try to make up for it.

01-23-09-big-boy-cartWe were grocery shopping, and look who sits like a big boy now! He sat up there the whole time, looking around all happy.

01-20-09-happy-boy1My happy boy! He’s such a love, smiling all the time!

01-19-09-sleeping-on-mommyHe fell asleep nestled in my armpit. I’d think it’d be uncomfortable, but he was so asleep. And he was just adorable- I love this picture, it just feels artistic somehow.

01-22-09-sleepingHe fell asleep in the Valley Mall, just after nursing. I just didn’t have the heart to move him.

My bento from my shopping day with my mom. It was supposed to be shared, but she decided to eat at home instead. Grilled chicken strips and bites, with white rice and stir-fry sauce in the container. Also, grapes, turkey, cucumber/carrot/bell peppers, and colby jack cheese, with ranch dressing. It was a good snacky, but if I’d made just mine, there’d have been more cheese, no turkey, and no strips of chicken, or bell peppers. Probably less cucumbers too.

01-24-09-bentoOrion’s bento the other day. My first octodog attempt! We hooked up the deep fryer, so he got fried gyoza, baked sausage buns, a hard boiled egg, frozen grapes, and applesauce (homemade!) and since I ran out of white rice (I know, go figure!) he got fried rice, spam fried rice, gyoza dipping sauce, and two octodogs.

I’m sorry the pictures are blurry. All I have is a camera phone, so it’s not high quality photos. I’m hoping to get a camera eventually, but money’s tight.

01-19-09-new-hatOn a slightly sad note, Mat Hatties in Spokane is going out of business- today was their last day. I’ll miss them! They were a lovely little tea shop. I got eight ounces of English Breakfast (broken orange pekoe, it smells heavenly!) and two hats to remember them by. This is my ‘casual’ hat, and I know the picture isn’t the best, but I took it at the hair-dressers during my mom’s appointment. (On another note, there’s my cameraphone! A Chocolate. You can see why my pics are fuzzy. I’m not known for a steady hand!) You can’t see in this pic, but it’s got a little sparkly buckle on the other side. I also got a ‘tea hat’ that I’ll have to get a picture of next time I have a tea party.

We’re in the planning for Lunar New Year on the 26th- soba noodles, mochi cakes, anko to make onigiri and other treats with, homemade noodles… I’m not sure what else. It’s been an adventure in cooking.

I’ve found more to add to my wishlist… and that is the art of Ursula Vernon. It’s my happy place. Especially the Wizard of Tea and the ABC’s.
Go forth and see her stuff. Buy her stuff, as she makes her living off of painting and writing. Her children’s book ‘Nurk’ is out, too. Also, her webcomic “Digger” is spectacular, although you can only read so much without subscribing. Honestly? Worth the subscription. TOTALLY worth the subscription.

Anyway, have an awesome day, and see you another time!

Bento for Jan 17th, 2009: Stirfry Veggies, steamed asparagus wrapped in procuitto and fried, sauteed mushrooms, a little cup of crunchy chicken noodle things, and rice with furikake; in the second box was three kinds of cubed cheese, thick slices of summer sausage, a cup of grapes, a cup of cucumbers, a bottle of catalina dressing, crackers, and two iced oatmeal cookies.
There was also a thing of yogurt, and a can of soup just in case he wanted more food. ^_^ He’s got a big appetite, good for him! A high metabolism means a lot of food, and he works so hard it’s good.

The ferrets were out the other day, and Digby crashed in the fluff-box. Just adorable, if you ask me! Puck is doing alright, although he’s still too skinny for my taste. The stress of the move, of losing baby, and of changing families has been a little rough on the poor guy, but he’s devouring the chicken baby food, so I’m thinking he’ll recover just fine. Puut’s just fat and sassy as ever. *laughs*

The snow crushed our fence by the back shop. That’s a lot of weight! O_O We’ll have to dig it out and see about repairing it.

A growly-bear for my growly-bear! This is Josh’s Mister Growly T. Bear. We got him from World Market for $5, on clearance. He was just so adorable I couldn’t resist.

He crashed on my lap, and I needed to finish what I was typing. *laughs* He never woke up! … and then he peed on me. So I guess we’re even.

We weighed him the other day, and he was at 13lbs 5 oz, so I measured and he’s just about 22 inches now! Probably longer, but this was the best I could do. We’ll find out at his doc’s visit on the 21st!

Sound asleep, we took a lovely headshot of him. What a beautiful, handsome, sweet boy! … okay, done gushing now.

My king of the basement- Coricopat. Cori’s a handsome cat we got as a tiny itty kitten, who had grown up to be egotistical, domineering, arrogant… in short, everything a good kitty should be. ^_^

Bento for Jan 18, 2009: Three-Rice Box (Spam fried rice, regular fried rice, white rice with furikake); and teriyaki veggies, turkey dumplings, steamed asparagus, a cup of grapes, and sauces- soy in the bottle, hot mustard in the packets. And a cup of crunchy chicken noodle things.

The dumplings are sort of a cross between a croquette and a meatball. Turkey and seasonings, wrapped in nori and fried. Recipe courtesy of Cooking Cute. The two fried rices are also Cooking Cute recipes.

We also got some steamed dumplings and some gyoza from the store- frozen. Takes just two minutes to steam and fry them, and boom! Fresh food!

We made pigs in a blanket today, too- with premade croissant rolls, the pillsbury kind? We cut them smaller and wrapped them around John Morell Cocktail Smokies (the only kind I like) and baked them. DELICIOUS!

We started a group here in Spokane for women who like Japan- anime, manga, bento, anything Japan-oriented. It’s called Sakura Blossoms (Check us out at our blog and our Craigslisting) and our first event is on the 26th, for New Years- a Year of the Ox celebration!

So, otherwise, have an awesome day! ^____^
