The Laughing Otter- because life’s just too short

So, I got a new laptop, a lovely Compaq. It’s come at a lovely time, since now I don’t need to wait for the computer to be open to update blogs, upload pictures, or work.  I can write articles, stories, or edit pieces without having to wait.

It also means I can pay bills easier, and get school set up. I found the advanced first aid course I need, plus the gear I’d like to have in time for TKD camp.

There’s also a camera on my wishlist…. a lovely 12megapixel with a 5x zoom. And video. It’s so pretty. ^^

Otherwise, not much. We’re working a lot right now, lots of drawing and coding, and my mom babysits a good bit these days, not that she minds!

We just got over a nasty round of sick, so everyone’s still coughing a little and got crap in their throats, but it’s better.

So we’re going to use our refund to pay for plane tickets, tuition to camp, pay off the credit card, get the camera, we already got the laptop, get the TKD encyclopedia, and get a laptop. The rest goes into standby for rent.

But I’m making the effort.

I’d like to say things are busy here, but in reality I’m just not thinking straight.

I’m not thinking much at all, actually. *laughs* So I’ll try to make up for it.

01-23-09-big-boy-cartWe were grocery shopping, and look who sits like a big boy now! He sat up there the whole time, looking around all happy.

01-20-09-happy-boy1My happy boy! He’s such a love, smiling all the time!

01-19-09-sleeping-on-mommyHe fell asleep nestled in my armpit. I’d think it’d be uncomfortable, but he was so asleep. And he was just adorable- I love this picture, it just feels artistic somehow.

01-22-09-sleepingHe fell asleep in the Valley Mall, just after nursing. I just didn’t have the heart to move him.

My bento from my shopping day with my mom. It was supposed to be shared, but she decided to eat at home instead. Grilled chicken strips and bites, with white rice and stir-fry sauce in the container. Also, grapes, turkey, cucumber/carrot/bell peppers, and colby jack cheese, with ranch dressing. It was a good snacky, but if I’d made just mine, there’d have been more cheese, no turkey, and no strips of chicken, or bell peppers. Probably less cucumbers too.

01-24-09-bentoOrion’s bento the other day. My first octodog attempt! We hooked up the deep fryer, so he got fried gyoza, baked sausage buns, a hard boiled egg, frozen grapes, and applesauce (homemade!) and since I ran out of white rice (I know, go figure!) he got fried rice, spam fried rice, gyoza dipping sauce, and two octodogs.

I’m sorry the pictures are blurry. All I have is a camera phone, so it’s not high quality photos. I’m hoping to get a camera eventually, but money’s tight.

01-19-09-new-hatOn a slightly sad note, Mat Hatties in Spokane is going out of business- today was their last day. I’ll miss them! They were a lovely little tea shop. I got eight ounces of English Breakfast (broken orange pekoe, it smells heavenly!) and two hats to remember them by. This is my ‘casual’ hat, and I know the picture isn’t the best, but I took it at the hair-dressers during my mom’s appointment. (On another note, there’s my cameraphone! A Chocolate. You can see why my pics are fuzzy. I’m not known for a steady hand!) You can’t see in this pic, but it’s got a little sparkly buckle on the other side. I also got a ‘tea hat’ that I’ll have to get a picture of next time I have a tea party.

We’re in the planning for Lunar New Year on the 26th- soba noodles, mochi cakes, anko to make onigiri and other treats with, homemade noodles… I’m not sure what else. It’s been an adventure in cooking.

I’ve found more to add to my wishlist… and that is the art of Ursula Vernon. It’s my happy place. Especially the Wizard of Tea and the ABC’s.
Go forth and see her stuff. Buy her stuff, as she makes her living off of painting and writing. Her children’s book ‘Nurk’ is out, too. Also, her webcomic “Digger” is spectacular, although you can only read so much without subscribing. Honestly? Worth the subscription. TOTALLY worth the subscription.

Anyway, have an awesome day, and see you another time!

So, I was looking on Craigslist for new friends. At first, I thought “Geez, how pathetic must I be to be willing to do this?” And then I realized, it isn’t pathetic at all. No more so than going clubbing or meeting at the library. It’s just the place I hang out, and so I make friends there. And everyone on there who’s posting is in the same boat I am.

So I made a friend, I hope- another girl about my age who likes the same things! Video games, reading, gardening, farmer’s markets… how cool is that? She’s going to have a baby soon too, which means she understands. *nods*

Another girl was looking for a penpal while she’s in Korea- I can do that, too. I’d love to!

Speaking of babies, I found a way to help premature babies and infants in Africa that are orphaned. Courtesy of Prolacta, you can donate your extra breast milk to feed those babies who desperately need it. Since I’m practically a milk cow, and I hate wasting the milk- it’s like wetnursing, only without actually breastfeeding the other babies. I love it! Use my extra to save lives, please!

So I made a bento the other day for Orion, that turned out not bad. Chicken stirfry made with a frozen veg mix. I had extra from dinner, so I took the uncooked portions of noodle, veggies, and chicken and froze them together in a bag for future use. Bam, instant lunch! Add some rice and some pickled ginger and it’s a bento of easy proportions. He did say it was a little dry, though. More sauce next time. Today he’s getting sandwiches, I’m too tired to make something. *nods* Yesterday I made the ginger in a little heart on the rice, though. *laughs*

We went shopping today, so much fun! We got my little bear a new pair of shoes, some clothes he’ll grow into eventually, a new carseat for in Nana’s car, a new diaper bag (for me!) and some new bibs that are cute!

We also had a sort of imprompteau family reunion- my aunt and uncle, and my niece stopped by my other aunt’s house- so my mom, three aunts, two uncles, my dad, and my niece and cousin all got to visit and have a good time. I now have new ringtones! Courtesy of a two hour swap of all things we liked. *laughs* Lots of fun!

Tomorrow the fireplace people are coming out to fix our pellet stove- thank Heavens. It’s freezing in the main house, nobody wants to go out there for the cold. At least the melt has made things a little warmer. the landlord walked through the other day for inspection and it looked good to me. He had suggestions for how to make the drain in the bath work properly, and if it doesn’t help we’ll get repairs for it.

I’m looking for a new freezer- I have one, a deep lovely chest freezer but I want an upright that I can store stuff in down int he basement so I don’t need to go all the way out into the shop to get snacks or ingredients for stirfry. i’m hoping to find one on Craigslist for free or cheap, but if I need I’ll pay a little more for it. I’m not good at pricing things.

Anyway, I’m exhausted and the baby is finally sleeping. It’s coming on bedtime! Take care, be safe y’all!
